Just a twenty minute drive east from Cambridge, you’ll find Newmarket, famous for its connection to horse racing as well as being the largest racehorse training center in the UK. The town, with a population of 2,500 horses and 15,000 people, was established in 1200. In 1605, King James saw it’s potential as a venue for equestrian interests due to its open lands and spring turf. The first recorded professional race took place in 1622.
The racing stables are situated in the center of the town and special horse routes have been built into the infrastructure so horses can easily access ‘the gallops’, a hill overlooking the town that is used as a training run to add to the horses’ workload and improve their strength and stamina.
