Surprise Air Show Cambridge Airport

Red Arrows at Cambridge Airport

Red Arrows at Cambridge

Sitting in our garden last Sunday morning, we noticed an unusual amount of notable traffic flying overhead. I walked into the house and Googled “20 September + Cambridge airport” and lo and behold, I found a schedule for an unannounced Friends and Families Day celebrating a Marshall Aerospace anniversary at Cambridge Airport. As is fairly typical, the general public is not always informed in advance when big performers are in the area. Marshall must pull some weight in the UK because this private air show included the Avro Vulcan and the Red Arrows among others. The Vulcan demo was scheduled for 15:50; the Red Arrows were scheduled to arrive at 16:30 with an 1800 flight demo.

The airport is a six minute drive from our house, and since we weren’t invited onto the field, we set up shop in the land fill south of the main runway at 15:30. As is always the case, off airport positions always yield some very interesting images, and because the field is actually higher than the runway, much of the positioning for the runway passes would take place directly over our heads.

Being from California and shooting aviation for the last 25 years, we’re typically cursed with ‘blue sky’ photography, but I really find the moodiness of the varying cloud cover, setting sun, and display smoke much more interesting. [Photos: Karen Lian] [Photos: Eric Lian]
